Captain Marvel - Carol Danvers by lilyinblue Captain Marvel - Carol Danvers by lilyinblue
Nobody was more thrilled than I was to hear that the former Ms. Marvel, Carol Danvers, would be getting a new series in July of 2012 as Captain Marvel. I'd been hoping to see this happen for years. With the new title came a new costume. While I did make a few "creative adjustments" to the costume design (mostly from the neck up), I tried to stay pretty faithful to Jamie McKelvie's new design.

I also did this as a speed paint exercise. As I'm always working at a snail's pace, I challenged myself to do something quicker. 6-7 hours, Photoshop and Illustrator CS5 with a Wacom Intuos 3.

Edit - 6/23/12:
I'm amazed at the positive response this piece has gotten. It's now been featured on both Project Rooftop and Comics Alliance! Thank you for all of the support!

Wow! Love the composition. The pose feels natural and her form is very flowing and natural with very good choice in colors. Was this really a speed paint? O_o

Thank you for the kind words!

It was really a speed paint... at least relative to my usual pace. (I'm pretty slow!) The underlying sketch was done in one night, the colors the next night.

I'm pretty slow too ^^ (especially on the computer... can never stop tinkering)

It did stand out for me and it's probably because you don't draw her as she's just naked with really awkward skin-paint like other people draw heroes. =)

really nice, clean job. what do you use illustrator for on a project like this? I usually just stay in photoshop so I'm curious what specific benefit it gives.

Thanks!

Probably 90% of the work is still in Photoshop. I just use Illustrator to go over all of the linework of the original sketch. I personally find it easier to get nice, clean lines out of Illustrator than Photoshop.

Exactly. Mostly just the pen tool with a few different brushes.

Thank you. It was really only a few adjustments to the existing concept... but I wanted to see what I could do with it.
